How Membership Works

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Romania – Great Britain exists to build lasting economic ties between the two countries. This section sets out what membership means for a company, what the working groups are, and what the Chamber offers Romanians in the diaspora.

What Membership Means

A member company receives introductions, visibility and a place in the Chamber’s community, and brings its own experience and contacts to it.

Who can join

Membership is open to companies in Romania and the United Kingdom, from start-ups and SMEs to large corporations, at four levels set by company size: SME Member (up to 20 employees), Business Member (21 to 100 employees), Corporate Member (more than 100 employees) and Founding Member, open to no more than 20 companies.

What members receive

The benefits of membership fall into five areas: Business Growth, Visibility, Community, Knowledge and Member Savings. Depending on the membership level, in practice this means strategic introductions, matchmaking and referrals, business delegations, market entry support, a company profile, speaking opportunities, business breakfasts, executive roundtables, workshops and webinars, market intelligence and preferential rates.

What members bring

Vice President Cornel Bertea Hanganu invites members to use the Chamber as “an active platform for connection”: “to bring to the same table the companies looking for partners, the investors looking for opportunities and the organisations that have projects capable of generating impact.”

The Working Groups

The Chamber’s working groups are its six sector committees and its Education Department. The committees group members by sector, and the Education Department is led by one of the Chamber’s Vice Presidents.

Six sector committees

The committees are DAPS (Digital Economy, AI and Professional Services), AEAM (Automotive, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing), EIIT (Energy, Infrastructure and Industrial Transition), CIMA (Capital, Investment and Market Access), ECTL (Education, Connectivity, Travel and Logistics) and AFCG (Agri-food, Beverages and Consumer Goods). Each covers a group of related sectors.

Committees and membership

A committee brings together member companies working in its sectors in Romania and in the United Kingdom. Committee work falls under Community, one of the five areas of membership; that area also covers business breakfasts, executive roundtables, the Chamber Podcast and ambassador events.

The Education Department

The Education Department is led by Andrei Răzvan Nacea, Vice President of the Chamber and President of the Department. His work for the Chamber focuses on business and educational relations between Romania and the United Kingdom, and on connecting organisations in the two countries. Education also falls within the remit of the ECTL committee.

Skills, training and retraining

The President, Felicia Akkaya, makes human capital an important part of her mandate: education, vocational training and retraining, and bringing schools closer to the labour market. For a company that needs qualified staff, or wants to retrain its own, this is the part of the Chamber’s work that concerns it most directly.

What the Chamber Offers the Romanian Diaspora

The Chamber’s President regards the Romanian diaspora as a source of experience, skills and capital, and as one of the most important links between Romania and the United Kingdom. For Romanians living and working in the United Kingdom, this is what the Chamber offers in practice.

Branch presidents in British cities

The Chamber has branch presidents in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Glasgow, and its office is in London. Several of them are Romanians settled in the United Kingdom, and dialogue with the Romanian communities there is part of the President’s mandate. A Romanian professional or company in or near one of these cities can approach the Chamber through its branch president there.

Introductions in both directions

Membership includes strategic introductions, matchmaking and referrals, business delegations and market entry support. These can help a Romanian-owned business in the United Kingdom that wants partners in Romania, as well as a Romanian company that wants to enter the British market, something the President’s mandate sets out to support.

Reconnecting with the Romanian economy

The President’s mandate also includes setting up mechanisms to reconnect the experience, skills and capital of Romanians abroad with the Romanian economy. This part of the Chamber’s work is relevant to members who want to invest in Romania or put their professional experience to use there.

Experience gained abroad

Marius Spătaru, President of the Chamber’s London Branch, stresses the part the diaspora can play: experience gained and relationships built abroad can support initiatives in Romania and create new commercial and educational links. A member can put this into practice through the Chamber’s committees, introductions and business delegations.

In Romania

In Romania, the Chamber has branch presidents in Bucharest, Brașov, Iași and Craiova; the president of the Cluj-Napoca branch is still to be appointed. In Iași, the branch president’s work focuses on the business community of Romania’s North-East and its connections with companies and opportunities in the United Kingdom. A member interested in a particular region of Romania can be introduced to the Chamber’s branch president there.
